Phyllis Gelling was born Phyllis Kennaugh in 1943 at Ballafageen where her parents farmed near Bishopscourt. Phyllis went to Kirk Michael Primary School and then Ramsey Grammar, she also worked at a Grocer’s shop in the village and attended the local Wesyleyan Chapel before moving to the Anglican Church at Bishopscourt. At 17, she moved to the nurse’s accommodation on Westmorland Road where she spent seven years whilst training to become a nurse and then qualifying at Nobles Hospital across the road where she spent the rest of her nursing career.
