The People vs Tynwald:The Manx General Strike, 1918

A short talk on one of the most important events in modern Manx history; the General Strike of 1918.

Not only is it the only successful General Strike yet carried out in the British and Irish Isles, it also prevented starvation of the Island, it enabled the payment of Old Age Pensions to the Manx and it was one of the key factors in the downfall of the Lieutenant Governor, Lord Raglan. It was an incredibly important point in Manx history and one which few people know enough about.

In a lecture marking the exact 100th anniversary of the halting of the strike, at 3pm on 5 July 1918, Patricia Skillicorn gave this informative and enlightening short talk on General Strike.
