Janet Narasimham

1995

Janet Narasimham was awarded the prestigious Reih Bleeaney Vannanan award in 1995 for her contribution to Manx culture. The award particularly recognizes the work that Janet did in the field of genealogy.

Born in Coventry as Janet Cox, she moved to the Isle of Man as a child where she first attended Baldrine School. Janet went on to study at University College, London, and later qualified as a librarian. After returning to live permanently on the Isle of Man in 1961, ‘Mrs Nara’ – as she was affectionately known – was appointed assistant librarian at the Manx Museum Library.

There she was able to assist many of those seeking information on Manx ancestry, and gained her expertise in local records. After retirement, she worked as a professional genealogist becoming a member of AGRA.

She wrote and published the book ‘The Manx Family Tree’, which has been an invaluable source to those beginning to research their family history. The book contains guidance on how to set about research and the types of records available.
