Fred Radcliffe

1998

The recipient of the Reih Bleeaney Vannanan award for 1998 was presented to Mr Fred Radcliffe for his excellent contribution to many areas of Manx culture.

Fred was a former Headteacher of Ashley Hill School in Onchan and an individual with a wide range of interests.

He led walks and trips, and carried out important field-walking work in the area north of Douglas, the results of which Archaeologists still use to this day. He was the vice president of the Isle of Man Antiquarian Society and gave many talks on Manx Gaelic place names and other topics of interest.

Fred was involved in many publications by Manx Experience, and together with Frank Cowin he revised the Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Isle of Man. He and Frank were also advisors for a book entitled ‘Here is the News’, as reported by Terry Cringle.

He produced three excellent educational packs for Culture Vannin: Manx Sea Fishing; Manx Farming & Country Life; Manx Mines, Minerals & Geology. These resources were compiled especially for schools in 2003.
