taking our culture forward

Vivien Quane (nee Caine) was born on 1 March 1944 at Glentramman, Lezayre, where her parents ran a poultry farm. She remembers the big snow of 1947, the rationing that continued after the end of the war and life around Lezayre church, especially the annual Sunday School outings.

She attended Albert Road School and Ramsey Grammar and on leaving became a cadet nurse at Ramsey Cottage Hospital in the 1950s. As well as treating Japanese TT Racers during her time at the hospital, she also speaks of the White Lady apparition which she and others saw on the front lawn of the hospital.

After her marriage to Finlo Quane and raising their three sons she became interested in community matters. She represented Ayre on the Board of Education, serving on the youth services committee for ten years. As a Ramsey Grammar School governor, she also served on the northern primary schools committee.

She has been a Lezayre commissioner for 14 years and is current chairman of the Isle of Man Municipal Association. She has long involvement with Lezayre Church and Sulby Horticultural Show. Her devotion to Ramsey Town Band spans many years.
