In 2016, Culture Vannin set up an annual bursary in the name of the late Professor Brian Kaneen. A Manxman living and working as a lecturer in German and linguistics at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Professor Kaneen left a generous legacy linked to the Manx language.
The bursary scheme reflects his wish to create opportunities for young Manx speakers to develop a wider understanding of the Gaelic continuum.
There are two categories of eligibility:
1) Individuals aged 18-30 to attend an Irish language summer school such as Oideas Gael in Donegal.
2) A teacher wishing to take a school-based group (Year 5 or above) on a trip to an Irish medium school or Irish speaking event.
Applicants should fulfil the following criteria:
1) Resident in the Isle of Man (this includes those resident in the IOM but studying in the UK, Ireland or elsewhere)
2) Be fluent speakers of Manx (minimum TCG or equivalent if aged 18-30)
To apply, complete the application form and submit electronically.
